Holds and Requests

A Library HOLD is a user request to be put on a waiting list for use of Library materials.
 
A HOLD is also known as a Library computer system REQUEST for items:   1. Owned by, but not currently available, at Mission College Library, and, 2. Circulating items owned by West Valley College, whether or not currently available at the West Valley Library.
 
Mission College Materials:   REQUESTS may be placed on Mission College circulating materials that are currently checked out to another user.   A system REQUEST alerts Library staff to intercept returned items which are then held for pickup by the requesting user for two weeks.   When a REQUESTED item is returned to Mission College Library, its Library online catalog status will be changed to "On Holdshelf." At this time, the item is available for the user to pick up at the Check Out Desk. Items not picked up within two weeks will be removed from the Holdshelf and placed back into the circulating collection for first-come, first served checkout or use.
 
West Valley College Materials: When a REQUESTED item is sent by courier to the Mission College Library, its Library online catalog status will be displayed as "In Transit." Once the item is available at Mission College Library, its online catalog status will change to "On Holdshelf." At this time, the item is available for the user to pick up at the Check Out Desk. Items not picked up within two weeks will be removed from the Holdshelf and returned to the West Valley College Library circulating collection.
 
 
REQUESTS may be placed: 1. By Library staff on behalf of the requesting Library user as a service, 2. As a self-service style by the requesting Library user on a public computer in the Library, and 3. Remotely by the requesting user. REQUESTS cannot be placed by or on behalf of Community users or Visitors.
 
Remote and self-service REQUEST options are available when using the online West Valley Mission Community College Library Catalog (see the Remote Services chapter, or the Mission College Library Electronic Services handout for more detailed information).
REQUESTS cannot be placed until a user is currently registered in the Library database. See the Registration chapter for more information about Library registration. Once a REQUEST is placed, the item cannot be checked out or renewed by another person.
 
REQUESTS are filled in the order received. If multiple REQUESTS have been placed, the first requestor will have first pickup priority. If the first requestor does not claim the item within two weeks, the second requestor will have next priority, and so forth. Library staff strictly enforce confidentiality laws and will not disclose any requestor name to any other person unless to another Library staff member for purposes of conducting Library business.
 
Held materials are arranged by users' last name on the Holdshelf behind the Check Out Desk. Authorized library users will need to show a valid picture I.D. card when picking


up a hold from the Check Out Desk. Pickups are not allowed by proxies or second parties, unless pre-arranged by DISC (Disability Instructional Services Center).
