Mission College Library audiovisual collections consist of audiovisual media, equipment, and accompanying print material which may be shelved in a different location than its parent material.
Audiovisual Media covered in this section includes videotapes/DVD (Media Reference), instructional materials such as filmstrips slides and kits. For policies about Reserves media, computer disks and CD-ROMs, see the Reserves and Computer Disks/CD-ROM loan sections of this manual.
Students may use borrow and use media reference videos/DVD in the Library only.
Faculty may borrow videotapes (Media Reference items) and instructional media (AV items located behind the Check Out Desk on Reserve) for use outside the Library for a default 24-hour loan. Faculty may renew checked out AV media for another six days (one week total) unless the item has been requested or recalled by another faculty member. West Valley College faculty may not borrow audiovisual materials from Mission College Library Media Reference Colelction. Exceptions must be coordinated through the Mission College Library Director.
Circulating media can be borrowed by students, faculty, and staff for three weeks.
Library confidentiality rules prohibit release of circulation record information. Therefore Library staff will not disclose to whom audiovisual media have been loaned whether or not faculty borrowers are within the same academic department. Faculty may not monitor audiovisual media use within the Library, nor may faculty ask a student viewing an audiovisual item in the Library to relinquish their use of the item for faculty use.
Video/DVD Shelving and Access
There are three shelving locations with differing levels of access:
1. Media Reference Videos/DVDs: Shelved as a group by subject, using Library of Congress (LC) call number, in the first tall range of shelving immediately following the book reference collection. They may be used in the library only, but Mission faculty may borrow them for classroom use by taking them to the Check Out Desk.
These consists of: 1). Currently owned videos which have been shown in classes regularly (selected with staff and instructor input), and b). New videos/DVDsspecifically requested by faculty for classroom showing.
2. Circulating Videos/DVDs: Are inter-shelved with the circulation books by subject, using LC call number. They may be checked out of the library for three weeks. Provided there are no holds on the videos/DVDs, patrons will be allowed one renewal. To ensure timely return, the library will charged overdue fines of $1 per day. Borrowers will be given clear notice of the fines when they borrow the videos.
These videos will consist of: a). Currently owned videos/DVDs that have not been used for regular classroom viewing or that have multiple copies, and b). New videos/DVDs acquired through librarian recommendation.
3. Reserve Videos/DVD: These are videos/DVDs that have been placed on course reserve by faculty request. They will be handled in the same manner as faculty reserves that are printed materials. They will be shelved behind the Check Out Desk and may be used in the library only.
